Q. What is choline, and should I be taking a supplement of it?
A. It’s a nutrient in the B-vitamin family that helps maintain the body’s cell structures. It also has a role in nerve function, fetal development, and the removal of fat from the liver. The body needs sufficient choline to maintain healthy blood vessels and cardiac, liver, and muscle function. The recommended intake is 550 milligrams a day for men and 425 mg for women, which most people can easily reach from foods such as eggs, fish, peanuts, soy, wheat germ, and milk. With such abundant dietary sources, supplements usually are not necessary.
